Monitor or headphones? 1 Year, 9 Months ago

If I had to choose between one of these which would probably benefit me more. I'm trying to just spend anywhere from like 99 to 150. I know I can get really good headphones for that but monitors on the other hand it's lower. I can get the m-audio desktop monitors which are 99. But i'm wondering for right now for mixing and mastering and stuff if headphones are good.
Thanks.

monitors have a better overall use... but headphones are much better for mixing.
id choose monitors first. but dont het cheap ones. i was going to get m-audio ones for £90 each, but the man in the shop said dont get these cause they are not professional, and the sounds are plasticy. he showed me some fostex PMO.4's which did sound a lot better. for £106 each. just look around on the net for reviews before u buy.

I used some crap Logitech headphones forever, but they actually sounded pretty good. But I just got some monitors, KRK Rokit 6's and they sound amazing, they are a little pricy but you definatly get what you pay for.

I fucks with some $20 headphones that I got from an "iPod Plus" Booth at the mall. Them joints sound good. Actually I get a different sound from it. I got studio headphones,$150 shits, but I only use them for the booth. When I'm making beats I start off with the cheap headphones till the beat is to my liking. I gives me an up close and personal feeling with my beat. Then when the beat is done I listen to them in the monitors. the see how everyone else will here them. The last step is in the whip. With the woofers bumping. Thats when you know if it crack or not!!!!

Monitors was the last piece I bought for my little home studio and actually wish it had been my first. after listening to how they sound i hated that i didnt get them earlier. i think mixing on a good set of monitors is the best. i will never go back to mixing on headphones. also, my xbox360 is hooked up to them to it serves a dual purpose for me

I'd say both .
headphones usually have a frequency range from about 10 - 20 khz , .... about . So this means you won't hear frequencies that you would usually hear with monitors , about 20 - 60 khz . The other thing about monitors is that they better for your ears . Believe me , my monitors didn't work for bout 3 weeks and I had ta work with my Sennheiser HD 595 , was like hell after 12 hours of constant loudness LOL .
Headphones are good cause you hear the sound the " direct way " . Hope this kinda helps you .

headphones dont recreate the sound as accuratley as speakers, they tend to have extra bass and different top end and various frequency response. i would always pick speakers over headphones, especially for mixing tracks (Djing it doesnt really matter as much) even the most expensive headphones are generally not as accurate as monitors.
when making tracks you want them to sound quite similar whatever system they are being played on.
i find the easiest setup to mix on is an accurate one.
and headphones arent great for your ears as there isnt really anywhere for the sound to escape.
headphones are better if there is noise coming from outside/the street etc.
but i agreee both can be used in different circumstances

Both. You need headphones to get into a sound, but the monitors are usefull for the overall sound.

YOU GOTTA GET BOTH!!!!
TIME AFTER TIME YOU HEAR THAT YOUR MIX ON HEADPHONES SOUNDS DIFFERENT AS YOUR MIX OVER MONITOR SPEAKERS!!!
SO GET BOTH AND CHOOSE THE MIDDLE WAY!!

For headphones, the Roland RH-200s, them bad boys are serious and I paid 130 for them a minute ago. I use them for basic mixing. Monitors are another story. You got to actually get some monitors worth a damn. I use Roland DM-20 Digital Monitors(about 250 not much but very nice) mix/mas and Technics SB-CR33s for my "Big Speakers" The freq response on the DM-20s is outstanding for the area I'm working in. They're also great for "mono" mixes (radio). The SB-CR33s let me hear/feel how its going to respond in the house/club. I'm going to boss up and get me the Mackies here shortly but I will never get rid of my Rolands. Granted the Yamaha NS-10s (no longer in production) were some ragidy ass speakers but they were widely used because if you could get a mix right on some NS-10s, it would sound good anywhere. Go figure. Also try playing a song that has a sound that you like through your speakers or headset and then try to mimic the sound. That helps until you can get those $5000 monitors.

this thread makes me proud.
no bickering no bitching and pure useful responses.
beautiful.
my two cents?
start with headphones, cuz yu spend moretime making your beat then basking in it, and headphones allow you to kill all other sound and yeah spend about 100.
BUT, make your very next purchase the moniors, cuz like dude said, you'll regret every minute you didn't get em...
and of course, this was also mentioned but let me reinforce that, you gotta check ya shit on multiple sources...
peace.

I mix in headphones $99 and when im done I use my reference monitors. I love my Alesis M1 Active, I still have the first Alesis monitor ones. I just ain't ready to pay a grand for the dynoaudios I want! Alesis are fairly cheap in price and they have that bang for buck!
