Yea ok...you can make a beat....and people like it....your even making money selling beats....but does that make you a producer??....thats the question... I know beatmakers who call themselves producers and make a beat...and have no idea how someone would create a track to it...like...they have no knowlege in song structure...and how to make an artist sound good over the track...to me...i feel thats a very important part of bieng a producer.....see you can just make beats.....or... you can make a beat...eq it till it sounds right...record the artist... tell them what sounds hot..and what doesnt....fix the odds and ends...and release it...or have it sent to be mastered....thats what a "producer" does....if you just put a snare hat and drum over a sample....does that make you a producer???...or a BEATMAKER???....What do you think????

ive spent mad hours tracking artists to get where i am today....i consider myself a producer but got a long way to go yet

Technically a producer doesn't even have to touch an instrument or MPC or whatever. He can just be the director of a song, sculpting the outcome through his vision of what the finished product should sound like. Making performance adjustments, compositional changes, mix changes and sonic/EQ changes to bring a song to its full potential is what a producer does. Definitely more than just making a beat.

Ouch.. That's gotta be a crushing blow to those coming up in the game.

Hit it right on the nose, to my knowledge P.Diddy has a team of producers/beat makers all he has to do is say change that chord homie and he just became a producer on that track. It could be telling a singer that they should sing in a different note. Could be you muting an instrument for a certain part. If your just making a beat pushing record recording your artist and not coming up with things that would make the song sound better your a beat maker that recorded an artist. If you come up with ideas to make the song better then your a producer!

What's up. This is a topic brought up constantly in the studio environment. I attend Full Sail University and this is actually a real topic brought up in class. My mentor was the first person to educate me the difference between a "Producer" and a "Beat maker". I said for years I was a "Producer" and assumed it meant making beats, but it actually does not. "P-Diddy" would be considered a Producer as well as Timbaland and The Neptunes. There actually more involved in the process of making music and recording. They have insight on where the song should go, what's hot, what to do where to go with it and actually deal with some of the financial aspects as well. Beatmakers are considered "Programmers" in the industry, and have little say in the project because there is so many people involved in actual recording. Executive Producer's , Assistant Engineers ect.... I think it's too many hands in the pot now a days and maybe that's why all of the music sounds like garbage but there is definitely a difference between a "Producer" and "Beat maker" . The term is thrown around loosely these days but simply because people are uneducated on what's what. It's a scientific and technically known the two are completely different.
