Define the Dirty South Genre 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago

I'm starting this forum because I've been told by producers on this site that some of my beats I've classified as dirty south don't fit the genre (Even though I'm from the south). To me a dirty south beat is one with a southern swag or bounce which usually comes from the drum pattern. Now a lot people seem to think that if the beat doesn't have synth, drum rolls, or if it has a sample that it isn't a dirty south beat . If that were true then Outkast wouldn't be classified as dirty south. So, I want your personal opinion on what defines a dirty south beat.

To me the drums are what usually make a beat sound dirty south, this means both the drum patterns and drum samples. Dirty south drums usually have heavier kicks with more bass and the snares/claps are a lot crisper and more electronic sounding.
I've heard all kinds of dirty south beats, from the synths to epic orchestra choir samples. To me the drums are what really makes a beat sound like it's dirty south, not the melody, instruments or samples.

This is a matter of opinion, sometimes you create a piece of music that isnt easily catorgorized. Yes, dirty south beats are known for their unique beat patterns, synths, ect, and if you make one like that then you fall safely between the lines of "dirty south". However, if you colored it outside the lines, you should be happy with your open minded self, and if you were shooting for something more define to the genre, then keep trying. You'll get there, keep banging

I couldn't agree with you more. People always have a need to categorize things i an effort to understand them. They need to listen to Geto Boys, 2 Live Crew, Shy D, Choice, DJ Toomp, OutKast, 8 Ball & MJG, T-Mix, Goodie Mob etc. I ever heard the term Dirty South until Goodie Mob's Soul Food album. The 808 has always been present in southern music but a lot of songs didn't have drum rolls and fast hi hats in cut timing. A lot of songs used samples or just had straight up music. ie OutKast Southernplayalistic. The sound that every one calls Dirty South now, can be credited to a producer from the 80's named Mantronix. He was from NYC I believe. He had a song called Bass Machine that had the pitched drum rolls, hi hats and the 808 kick was thumping.

Dirty south music has nothin to do with the drums or drum pattern. Dirty south music is like any other form of music. Its about capturing the feel of the south, that easy going southern hospitality.Just listen to Scarface, the ghetto boyz, outkast and goodie mob.
But then you have artists like Cee-lo whom i still consider a true dirty south pioneer: doing the gnarls barkley thing, that could also be categorized as dirty south music if you really listen to the sound of it... It has nothin t o do with 808 or fast hi hats thats just the stereo type of southern music thats been messin the game up for us in the south. THAT STEREOTYPE HAS BEEN PUTTIN TOO MANY ARTIST IN A BOX

the only way to classify a beat is by the drums and or the tempo...to classify an entire song depends on the dialect of whos spitting...the instruments dont really matter...i dont even like classifying beats because its all hip hop...
