To me it'll be more of a headache down the road with sample clearance and all..so I just stick to original compositions.

I'm not here to hate on catz who sample. I've hear superb work based off of samples, from the top of the game to the up-and-comer... If they get the work, GOOD FOR THEM. I just pray they got their asses covered when lawyers come knocking.
As for me, I don't need a sample as a foundation for my music. Check out my page: all 100% ghettoriginal! Stop by and give me some honest critique. It's appreciated.

I do both but I try to stay away from samples because you have to pay to clear them if you do something with it. Now if its all your creation and someone wants to sample it down the road they have to pay you to use it. Some of these cats want all the composition royalties even though you flipped the sample and added this and that. It's crazy!

TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH BUT I CAN'T SING . Let me add i will sample on a lazy day or when i got beat block, i will dig in my stash and come up with some $hi.

It doesn't matter to me anymore.
I barely sample than I used to before, but as Stewface said, Sampling is a part of history. I don't know why people, who compose, knock down on people who sample.
Some people, when you hear a sample, you want to find out what is the material this producer interpolate. This is good because you a re expanding your musical knowledge and library and adding that to your catalog.
For example, I became a big fan of soul after I heard Touch The Sky by Kanye West (prod. by Just Blaze). I went on back hearing the original piece performed by Curtis Mayfield entitled "Move on Up."
I liked his voice soooo much that I started collecting his music, thus expanding my library of music. This became a blend of my big taste of music and it doesn't stop there.

Composing is great as well. From time to time, i'm learing Music Theory again. I picked up a lot of stuff when I took Piano lesson courses in College: Chord Progressions, Measures etc...
Sometimes I like to remake a piece that has been made and make it sound real different which most producers that are on here tend to do.

Sampling or Composing...it doesn't matter where you fall as a Producer. There's a large list of great Producers out there doing big things and going places with their sampled work and composed work. Some kats may sample beats and sell them to underground/unsigned artists who either just do Hip-Hop for a hobby and fun. And for those serious may just cop sampled beats for mixtape material. The way to look at it though...is that a company who owns the right to the sampled beat, most likely won't sue an artist with no name...isn't getting great amounts of money, and basically isn't doing large enough moves to get money sucked out of for usin the sample..at least that's my theory. ALSO Producers can get away with this if they CLEARLY state in the contract upon purchase that sample clearance is up to the customer and not yourself. As for composing goes...nothing wrong with that...I know jack shit about all this music theory complicated shit...all I need to know is what keys sound together...how well it fits in the melody...and timing with notes. Just those key things will bring a unique beat hands down.

I love composing from scratch the most. Every blue moon, I'll sample something, but I really don't want to deal with going through the trouble of getting samples cleared. I think that both composing and sampling takes talent. There are some producers out there that can take a sample and make it sound like a brand new song, and I think that takes just as much talent as a producer that composes. For example, when Just Blaze sampled Rick James "Superfreak" and came up with Jay Z's "Kingdom Come". He didn't just take 4 bars and throw some drums on it and call it a day, he really chopped that sample and made a new song.

For me, it's about composing. However, I respect the producers that flip samples creatively....it really is an art, and a fundamental part of hip hop.

Everybody gives a damn who produced the beat or wrote the music or wich sample they been using.
If the music are yours and original everbody will notic you as a original producer and u i'll get more famous, not a fake ass producer who's stealing shit everyday from BIG artist or people. I tryin' for myself to be Original at all the time because u don't even know what happends next. Then you i'll feel sorry for shit you've been doing. Ok you use a sample and remake it so bad that nobody i'll recognize it. At the end you i'll expect all kinds of feedback.
