I still haven't bought the monitors yet, but instead I opted to go to a conference to learn more about the business side of this industry.

I need some good quality monitors though. I can't see myself settling for a cheap set just to have to buy a more expensive set later.

My ? is this.....I'm pretty set on the KRK 8" to start off with, but I want to hear from those that actually have used these and tell me if that's a good start to use. I've heard some spot that have 3 sets of monitors and it was a better quality to set each pair for the Highs, mids, and lows.

Holla back and tell me if that is a good start or whatever ideas you have.

where are you maximizing in your chain? it seems from your post that you are maximizing just before the monitors, you should slide the max back behind the outs to the monitors, where it can affect the signal before it becomes stereo out. otherwise, if you're running it the way I think you are, you're not hearing the true signal.

As to what to look for in a monitor, I would head over to Guitar Center armed with a CD that you know very very well. There we hopefully be a working player connected to a switching box so you can switch between the different monitors while listening. Maybe listen for 5 seconds so that your ears can pick up details like bass, mids,and highs. Then switch to another pair and compare that set of speakers to the first set. After a while just start narrowing down your choices to pick a winner.
You'll find the Alesis M1s having a deep bass and a hyped hi end. The KRK Rokits are a cool inexpensive workhorse. M-Audio has mid priced choices that are slick as well. After your listening session your ears will tell the clear choice.

For Making Beatz I Recommed The Yamaha HS80M's They Are Near Fielded, You Can Adjust The Settings TO The Type Of Room You Have... And Only Cost A Little Bit More Than The KRK's Plus They're Better Than Them Too..

I AGREE...I MIX WITH YAMAHA HS80M....BUT I ALSO HAVE SOME EVENT SP6'S THAT GIVE IT THAT CRISPNESS....YOU GET WHAT U PAY FOR REMEMBER THAT.

I have the KRK Rokit RP5 G2's and I have to say this is good advice. For 150$ a speaker you can't go wrong. (You could pick up some Generation 1's for probably $100 a piece, but the G2's do sound a bit better)
