I suggest you don't read any answer more specific than this one.
and further I state that you won't know if the answer is more specific until you read it, so... Don't read any answers at all after this one.
one day turn on your favorite sequencer. load up your five favorite sounds, and in the same categories as your favorites, load five random sounds.
now TOUCH EVERYTHING YOU HAVEN'T TOUCHED YET.
when you've touched everything, touch it in a different order FLIP EVERY PARAMETER, read the module AFTER you twist it, just go in and monkey test the whole shit tryin ta break it.
that's the only way you'll figure out how ta freak shit.
everybody all up and down the hallway where grandmaster flash lived thought he was fuckin up for nothin...
pick completely random sounds and go nuts, maybe even try fuckin with the pitch, or the tuning...
don't leave anything stock.

It isnt a trumpet. If you want that low brass sound like in them rick ross joints then you find a BRASS ENSEMBLE sound...Strike that.. NEVER USE regular single shot instruments transposed. You lose quality when you time stretch. Get a VST like Edirol Orchestral. Im sure you can find it online somewhere and its a good started VST.

Brass sandwich.... lol, yea, because stock sounds is getting old, I always sandwich snares, bassdrum, even hihats, but most important brass.

AS GREAT OF ADVICE AS THIS IS. YOU STILL AINT GONNA GET THAT BRASS SOUND. TRY SOME BRASS VSTS. I USE THE AC BRASS SOUND OFF THE FANTOM AND MIX IT WITH EDIROL BRASS ENSEMBLE.

Stack, layer, mix, stack again, tweek, edit, layer, mix. don't leave anything stock. Blend different horns from different machines. Also, listen to a lot of classical music. You will begin to understand how horn sections work together. Run them with a few synth sounds to give it that cut. Fuck using the presets. Experiment!!!!

yes... layering will be your best friend when trying to fatten up sounds and achieve BIG instruments....layer multiple sounds/at different pitches. USE of chorus effects, and delays is useful as well.
KNOW your EQ'S
great reference...
